The Real Klaviyo Limitations Agencies Work Around (And How)
Every platform has real limits. Klaviyo included. The agencies whose accounts look like they don’t have any aren’t running a different tool, they’re just better at working around the same ones everyone hits. Here’s what those Klaviyo limitations actually are in practice, and the specific fix for each.
Why “Which Platform Is Best” Is The Wrong Question
The right question isn’t which email platform has the fewest limitations. None of them have zero. The right question is whether the limitations you’re going to hit have a known, repeatable workaround, because that determines how much they actually cost you day to day. Klaviyo’s limitations are well understood at this point, which is exactly why they’re manageable.
Limitation 1: Segmentation Performance On Large Lists
Live segments with complex, layered conditions get slower to evaluate as a list grows into the hundreds of thousands, especially when several conditions are chained together. The workaround is to stop asking the segment to do that evaluation live. Instead, run a flow that checks the condition once and sets a simple tag or custom property on the profile. Segments built on top of that tag are fast because they’re just checking a flag, not re-running the original complex logic every time. More setup work the first time, close to zero performance cost after that.
Limitation 2: Cross-Channel Attribution Overlap
When a brand runs both email and SMS through Klaviyo, both channels can end up claiming credit for the same conversion, which makes either channel’s dashboard number look better than it actually is in isolation. The workaround isn’t picking a “more accurate” channel to trust, it’s setting an explicit attribution window and priority rule (which channel gets credit if both touched the order within the window) and applying it consistently, so the numbers are at least internally consistent even if imperfect. Comparing month over month against your own fixed rule tells you more than trusting either dashboard’s raw number in isolation.
Limitation 3: Template Editor Limits For Complex Dynamic Content
The drag-and-drop editor handles standard layouts well but gets genuinely limiting once a template needs highly customized dynamic content blocks, conditional sections that change per segment, or layout patterns the editor wasn’t built for. The workaround is building modular, reusable saved sections once, rather than rebuilding complex custom blocks from scratch inside every new campaign. It moves the one-time cost of solving the layout problem to a single build, instead of paying it repeatedly.
Limitation 4: Deliverability Visibility
Klaviyo shows opens, clicks, and bounces, but doesn’t show inbox placement directly, whether an email actually landed in the inbox versus spam or promotions. The workaround is treating engagement-tier tracking and periodic seed-list testing as a proxy signal, since direct placement data isn’t available inside the platform itself. It’s not a perfect substitute, but it’s the practical way to catch a deliverability problem before it shows up as a slow open-rate decline that’s hard to diagnose after the fact. Our guide to email list hygiene in Klaviyo covers the segmentation-tier system this proxy tracking plugs into.
The Real Lesson
None of these four limitations are reasons to leave Klaviyo, and none of them are secret. They’re well-known friction points with well-known fixes, which is exactly the gap between an account that’s set up properly and one that isn’t. The Klaviyo flows that handle Limitation 1’s tagging logic are the same underlying system used across most of the other workarounds here, it’s one architecture decision, not four separate fixes.
If your account is hitting one of these walls and the workaround isn’t already built in, that’s usually a quick fix, not a platform problem. Book a free audit and we’ll tell you which one it actually is.
